Tram Service Trial This Week

November 30th, 2009 nick No comments

Associated Students is going to be providing a tram from the Mission Beach Roller Coaster to Campus the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd of December.  This tram will be a trial-run to see if we would be able to support this type of commuter transportation on a regular basis.

In the past, interest in a tram from Mission Beach has been expressed, but it has yet to be sufficiently put into place.  We have many USD students living in Mission Beach commuting to school every day and feel that a tram service for these students would be a great improvement.  By instituting a tram, we can help  reduce our carbon footprint in an effort to “Be Blue Go Green.”  Students will be lowering the number of vehicles used in commuting to school and therefore will greatly lower daily carbon-emissions.  The tram that will be used even runs on clean fuel, furthering the enviornmental benefits of this service.  In addition, the tram will reduce the amount of money that students are spending on gas and will help with the increasingly difficult parking situation on campus.  Saving money and time is something all college students are looking to do so we believe that this service is something that would greatly benefit the student body.

The Director of Transportation, Kelsey Chase, and the Director of Sustainability, Peter Larr, have been working very hard on this trial and we hope to get a lot of participation from the student body.  We will be monitoring the number of students riding the tram throughout the three days in order to make a decision on whether or not this is something that students will utilize on a regular basis if it were to be implemented this upcoming spring semester.   Hopefully, participation will be high and this commuter service will become a part of the regular USD tram service.

In conclusion, this is a very great opportunity for USD students to reduce their carbon emissions, save money, and avoid troubles with the parking situation on campus.  The tram will be running from 7:30 a.m. – 12:30 and 2:00 p.m.- 6:00 p.m.  picking up at the Mission Beach Roller Coaster, stopping at the UTA’s to pick up students living there, and finally ending at the tram stop outside of Copley Library on December 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.  We hope you and the rest of the student body will join us in this effort and support the Mission Beach tram service!

Sincerely,

Lilly Stitt

The Rave Debate: Interview With Brent Tuttle and Ryan Coghill

November 24th, 2009 Ariel No comments

This past weekend we had the pleasure of interviewing the author of one of the most talked about Vista articles to be published this semester.  In his article , Brent Tuttle explained the feelings he held towards certain “ravers” and the rave culture.  The article itself was met with much backlash from some of the student population who believed that the language used to describe the ever-expanding counter culture was too strong and generalized.  With this interview, the radio station hoped to shed light on the subject and provide a different perspective to rave culture.  Here’s how it went.

Read the original article from the Vista

While I had strongly disagreed with Brent’s original article, the interview definitely allowed some clarity to be brought to Brent’s position.  I ultimately agreed with his stance that certain members of the rave community are responsible for giving raves such a negative connotation, but at the same time I disagreed with the generalization that was made that grouped ordinary rave goers and electro fans with the heavy drug users that exist at the extreme.

Movin’ Up: Thao & the Get Down Stay Down @ the Casbah 11/19

Thao & the Get Down Stay Down

Thao & the Get Down Stay Down

Thao & the Get Down Stay Down visited the Casbah last night with openers the Portland Cello Project. Thao and bandmates Adam & Willis Thompson are touring for the release of their Know Better Learn Faster album released in October on Kill Rock Stars. The folk pop indie rockers  were joined by PCP and David Shultz for their drop-in to San Diego before heading to the Glass House in Pomona tonight.

Opener Portland Cello Project consisted of an ensemble of several classically trained celloists putting on an impressive instrumental show. Their frontman–labeled so as he took the mic between songs–was one of the most crowd-charming performers I have seen in a while. Credit needs to be given to him for how well he kept the crowd engaged and enjoying the show. PCP featured a “Hey Ya” cover with David And Willis on stage, which worked well with the crowd. The group also played their rendition of an unreleased Eliot Smith song, which they received from their producer. The groups’ passionate performance and immaculate instrumentation is a definite see if they’re in your area. And again, their “frontman” did an amazing job handling the Casbah concert-goers.

Thao and the gang took nearly an hour to begin their set after PCP. This thinned the crowd quite drastically and left a number of those who stayed chanting “It’s a Thursday night”. Their set didn’t begin until nearly midnight, which was unfortunate as it was an excellent set that suffered from a smaller crowd than they could’ve played for. Thao’s energy was simply amazing, with her small small frame rocking itself silly with every song. She certainly proved why there is an “&” between her name and the backing band. They featured a number of songs from their last album We Brave Bee Stings and All, including “Geography” and “Bag of Hammers”. Her vocals were poignant and steady, though they would’ve benefited from being turned up. The new material off of KBLF showed off a matured, deeper sound and a good diversion from the faster, rapid-strumming melodies of their former album. Thao did well with this range, demonstrating diversity in both song-writing and performance abilities.

Sour Patch To Acid Tongue

2380132526_0945be7878So it has been awhile- I missed a week and that makes me sad.

However, here’s the latest episode. In recent alternative news, I did an interview with Sherwood last week and you can check that stuff out on our site or in The Vista. I guess an article a week has made me a “Staff Writer” for the paper. Coghill’s sweet like that.

I’m interviewing Eisley on Saturday night at the Say Anything show- super stoked on that.

This show is a particularly good one; more rock, more upcoming concerts, and just all out more fun.

  • Oxygen – Living Things
  • Do Better – Say Anything
  • True Faith (New Order Cover) – Anberlin
  • Medicate – AFI
  • Kings and Queens – 30 Seconds to Mars
  • Re-Education Through Labor – Rise Against
  • California – Paper Tongues
  • Youth – White Apple Tree
  • Take Me Home – After Midnight Project
  • All The World Is Mad – Thrice
  • The Thief – The Dear Hunter
  • What You Do To Me – We The Kings

It’s Someone’s Birthday!!- Peter Bjorn and John Concert Review

Peter Bjorn and John Living Things

Peter Bjorn and John Living Things

Ever want to go to a celebrity’s birthday party?  Well tonight I had the awesome opportunity to go Peter Bjorn and John’s  birthday show at the House of Blues.  They are celebrating their 10th birthday as a group.  And wow, what a show it was.  First thing is first, though.  El Perro Del Mar, also hailing from Sweden, was one of the opening acts for the show.  I arrived at the show just in the nick of time to catch the last few songs of the set.  Sarah Assbring was absolutely entrancing.  She was full of energy, and she really got the crowd going before Peter Bjorn and John got on stage.  I actually got a chance to tell her how great she did when she walked out in front of me at the end of the show.

As high as El Perro Del Mar set the bar, though, Peter Bjorn and John stepped over it like it was nothing but a toothpick.  If the live set in The Closet from this afternoon fooled you into thinking they would not pump you up, let me tell you first hand how wrong you are.  The set was so energy filled, Red-Bull is filing a law suit.  Having any range of 3 to 6 people on stage at any time, multiple instrument changes, and crowd involvement of the whistling and singing type, one could not help dancing to the music, even if it was as little as a head nod or a toe tap.  The only people that were not moving were those too awe-filled to do so.  “Needles and Pills” from their album Seaside Rock offered a climax to the show at the end before.  Just six dudes going crazy on their respective instruments- including a cowbell and trumpet.

I had really never given too much attention to Peter Bjorn and John before tonight.  After tonight, though, I am definitely going to start listening to them more.  Maybe someday I will be as devoted as Omar and Linda, the couple from Tuscon, AZ, that went to the show in Tuscon last night and the show here tonight.  Someday…

If you want to get some more info, try their myspace in the live show from this afternoon posted below.  If you get the chance, go see them.  Two thumbs up. Boom City.
